China Training Institute 2009 Energy Efficiency Training Series

Background

China has witnessed rapid economic growth over the past ten years and with it, an increase in materials and energy costs.  With the present financial turmoil, businesses must cut costs to stay competitive.

Most factory managers prefer cutting operations costs through energy-saving, waste reduction, and productivity improvements rather than through lay-offs and wage decreases.  A number of factories in China have significantly reduced their energy costs by investing in technologies as simple as energy-efficient lighting and air-conditioning systems.

However, many of these factory managers do not know about energy-efficient technologies or how to pursue funding, let alone how to start an energy-saving program. To this end, BSR has designed a training initiative to help Chinese suppliers start efficient energy-saving programs, secure funds and provide practical guidance on how to implement progressive and cost-effective programs.

The Courses

The training will consist of four sessions starting in the second quarter of 2009, each lasting one day.  The sessions will be conducted in Mandarin and will be highly interactive and participatory.

Course content

Module One: Energy Management and Energy Assessment (1 Day)
The first module is a one-day training focused on helping factories to understand how to assess energy consumption, where and how energy consumption can be reduced, and the low costs involved in starting an energy-saving program. CTI will invite an energy efficiency expert to deliver this content and a project manager from a company to explain the building of an energy efficiency management committee.
  • How to assess where energy is wasted and the costs associated with this waste
  • Wasted energy root cause analysis
  • How to put forward effective energy saving options
  • The steps to build an energy efficiency management committee

Module two: Energy Saving Technologies and ROI Analysis (1 Day)

The second module will explain options for energy-saving technologies and help participants understand the ROI (Return on Investment) they provide.  This module will prepare participants to choose energy-saving technologies that are best-suited for their situations. A project manager with abundant experience in energy efficiency services will be responsible for the training of this section.
  • What is an energy audit
  • How to calculate the ROI period
  • Low-price energy facilities introduction and ROI analysis
  • Case studies
  1. Energy management in a factory
  2. factory’s energy expenditures
  3. Energy saving from building improvement, air-conditioning and electric system efficiency, improved factory lighting, and water transportation improvement

Module three: Obtaining Funding (1 Day)

The third module will introduce methods for funding energy-saving projects.  There is a variety of funding available through the national government’s incentive program, energy service companies, and other organizations. An officer from the local government, a senior manager from a Hong Kong production center and a manager from an energy services company will be invited to be speakers in this session.
  • Chinese government’s energy saving policies introduction
  • Understanding how to apply for energy saving funds
  • Energy saving investment and financing management
  • Energy saving policies introduction
  • Successful case studies
  • Introduction to energy contract management and case studies

Module four: In-factory Visit and Case Study (1 Day)

During the last training module, participants will visit a factory with an energy-saving program.  They will learn about the factory’s operation, program implementation strategy and management and their ROI period. CTI will arrange to visit one of the factories with successful energy efficiency program which will share its experience on-site.
  • Case studies through an in-factory visit
  • On-site project and operation Introduction
  • How the project was determined and carried out
  • The benefits of the energy saving program
