BSR LRP team and labor relation experts went into the footwear factory

In mid December, BSR LRP team and labor relation experts went into the footwear factory with the aim of making in-depth potential labor risks research and come up with relevant recommendations. In this research, BSR LRP team and labor relation experts had interviews with factory top management, HR/ER department, mid-level management and line workers as well as reviewing relevant documents. Key observations are:

  1. Participatory workplace culture needs to be fostered
  2. Ineffective communication between middle management and first-line workers existed
  3. Inadequate training for mid-level management
  4. Unfair job allocation owing for personal relationship
  5. Lower employee loyalty
  6. Lack of awareness of personal development
  7. Ineffective process for employee grievance
  8. No clear incentive system
  9. Concerns on canteen and dorms management

The LRP experts' recommendations:

  1. Strengthen training on comprehensive knowledge and communication for mid-level and grass root management
  2. Foster participatory workplace culture and enhance worker loyalty
  3. Ensure message can be delivered consistently among workers of all levels
  4. Strengthen trainings on career development and vocational knowledge
  5. Increase information transparency and channels for promotion
  6. Provide training on crisis management
  7. Promote employee assistance program
